I have decide that it would be a good idea to start writing online again. Lately, I have been developing my social networking services without doing my for my actual social network.
I was reading a blog post recently about how your blog may be your most important social network.
I believe that if I better define my online spaces and then connect my spaces through social networking services, I will be much better off than relying on the services themselves.
The emphasis on controlling my own data was emphasized recently with the closing of Geocities. I remember the buzz around the free web publishing service Geocities when we got broadband through SBC. Luckily, early on, I realized that add supported is not free. I decided to buy my own web hosting. Since Geocities, I have resisted Blogger, WordPress,com, Google Sites, Ning, LiveJournal, and Squarespace. These services may have got me in the game earlier and facilitated creating content but other than a couple of services, I wouldn’t be in complete control of my content.
I have, however, become subject to Twitter and Facebook. I spend my writing time using those services while neglecting my own
My writing goal in the immediate future is to outline my online writing strategies so that I have a better plan moving forward.
I will think about my online personas, who my audience is, consider my purpose, explore how to syndicate my content, and eventually market my writing to develop a more broad audience.
For this post, my intended audience is myself. I hope that this post is not broadcast via Twitter of Facebook. I need to develop a tag based system that gives me more control over syndication.
